Double Locks, Exeter

The Problem

Double Locks is a popular 18th-century Inn situated on the Exeter Ship Canal. With outdoor seats by the canal locks and cosy log fires, Double Locks is one of Devon’s most popular pubs.
We were contacted and asked to design a signal solution to fix the very limited mobile signal at Double Locks. Poor mobile signal meant that the payment devices (point of sale terminals) didn’t work, especially during busy periods. The building has thick brick walls which were doing an excellent job of blocking mobile signal.

Our engineers visited the pub to carry out a site survey. The survey included several signal tests throughout the building, as well as planning out the design for the equipment locations. This particular project had installation challenges as Double Locks was built in 1701 and is a listed building. It was paramount that our design was sympathetic to the building requirements including keeping in line with listed building guidelines.

The SOLUTION

Customer requirements

This customer wished to have all 4 mobile networks boosted throughout their premises. This required 4 external donor antennas (1 for each network), each of which were connected to a CEL-FI QUATRA Network Unit using low loss LMR400 coaxial cable. We used Cat6 cable to connect the Network Units to 8 CEL-FI QUATRA Coverage Units to evenly distribute the signal throughout the property.

The Chosen Solution

Our Amplifi-Qx Digital solution is powered by CEL-FI QUATRA technology. A total of 4 CEL-FI QUATRA Network Units (NUs) and 8 CEL-FI QUATRA Coverage Units (CUs) were used for this project, plus 4 external antennas to pick up the donor signal from outside the building.

Installation challenges

There were a number of challenges to overcome during this project. Due to this being a listed building, we needed to plan our cable routes carefully. We utilised existing cable routes so that we didn’t need to drill new holes.
As this is a busy public house, we were asked to work outside of opening hours. We always try to be as flexible as possible, so this wasn’t a problem.

The Result

Significant improvement throughout

On completion of any installation we’ll always walk around the property to test the signal in various locations – comparing the boosted signal to the original signal readings.
The results at Double Locks were excellent; the signal for 3G & 4G was significantly improved across all networks.

Immediate results

The customer was immediately able to see the results of their new mobile signal solution. Their POS devices began to work and customers were able to use their mobile devices.
Straight away customers started to comment and tell us that their phones were working and the staff were finally able to receive their SMS messages without having to leave the premises.

Signal reading comparison

We use professional signal testing equipment to take dBm readings (decibel milliwatts) – we then compare these to the pre-install readings to calculate the increase in mobile signal. A really good dBm reading will be somewhere between -70dBm and -90dBm … the closer to zero the better!
